Wonder if my throat would puff up into a red balloon? Dumb thing to do. Stupid. Don’t want to cam ee lion or change colors.

“People and cats can’t change color,” Boston says, reading my thoughts.

Bummer. Oh well, can’t see any reason I’d want to turn green and look like a leaf. Once I caught a lizard by slamming my paw down on its tail and when I reached down to bite his head, he dropped his tail and ran off. Stupid tail was wiggling back and forth under my paw. Boston told me they do that. Drop off their tails. Stupid. I wouldn’t leave my tail behind.

Should I catch him? I wouldn’t eat him. Those lizards, a nols, make me sick. They eat bugs. Yuk. I could jump up in the tree and get the stupid lizard. Too much effort. Not that bored and I’m tired and this spot in the sun is fine for a short nap, so I curl up. Listen with one ear as Boston talks to Bob on her cell. “Two people in the camper, one in the truck. They’re talking. By the camper. On a cell phone. Looks like they have omni directional booster antennas attached to the camper and truck. Oh, they’re all getting into the truck. Wait. They’re driving toward us.” She holds her breath, a hand on me. “Past us. They drove past us, down to the shoreline. Parking. They are getting out. Looking over the water. Waiting?”

“Stay where you are. Don’t do anything. I’m sending backup,” Bob says.

“Not going anywhere,” she mumbles. “What’s he think I’m going to do?” She pulls out her color pencils and starts sketching.

I close my eyes for a nap, but before I can fall asleep, another truck, with a loud engine, pulls up and parks.

Kevlar along with Rangers Jackson and Rose walk by laughing loudly carrying fishing poles and head to the shoreline. Ignore us. Boston whispers that to Bob in her cell. She looks to me and adds, “I’d feel better with more law enforcement guys. On the plus side, maybe they’ll catch supper.”

Fish supper? My favorite.

A few minutes later, a squad car noses out from the trail behind the motel, hidden from the shoreline. A second car parks behind it. Two more Rangers, in long sleeve flowered shirts, walk to the shore with fishing poles, two stand by the vehicles.

“Pine Island Rangers are on the main park road by the entrance to the campground,” Bob says on the cell. “And we have the road blocked at the bridge. If they get by the guys in the campground they’re not going anywhere.”

“The Rangers have them boxed in, surrounded. Smart,” Boston says. “Bob must have decided they’re going to try to pull the boat here, now, since it’s almost dark. He’s pretty sure of himself. Hope they have contraband on board.”

Pack hunters. Humans acting like a pack. Didn’t know they could do that. Dogs, well wolves, which are just big wild dogs, hunt in packs. Boston says wolves hunt buffalo.
